Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying
Ram Dass
Ram Dass (aka Richard Alpert) is one of my favorite spiritual teachers. His journey through life has been remarkable and his most recent book, Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying is perhaps the most enlightening of all his books. Don’t let the sub-title put you off…whether you are 30 or 60, you will get so much out of reading Still Here. As one reader said, 'I bought this book because I wanted to better understand the world of my parents and grandparents. I was surprised to learn that its message was just as relevant to me at the age of 40.' It’s a book to make your spirits soar!

Ram Dass has a stunning sense of humor that accompanies his wisdom as he talks about the changes that occur throughout our lives. This humor is even evident when he talks about his surviving a debilitating stroke: He had been looking for the perfect ending to Still Here. But, since he was so healthy, he felt he didn’t have an understanding of what real aging was all about. After the stroke, and confined to a wheelchair, he jokes that he couldn't have found a better understanding of aging anywhere!
It is now a number of years later, and a lot of his mobility has been restored, but he is still somewhat physically impaired. Even that is something to joke about. For example, he says that even though he can now move around with a walker, he has grown to love his wheelchair... 'Who wouldn't rather ride than walk?' The poignancy is there is well such as when he says... 'I haven't been cured of my stroke, but I have definitely been healed by it.' Yes, he learned so much from his stroke. He makes us understand why everything in life, no matter how terrible, is a valuable lesson to be embraced.
Still Here is a book about change...and reading and embracing this book will make the journey through life much easier, much more joyous, and much more fulfilling.
