I am so happy to recommend from Susan's Bookshelf the amazing book, Chop Wood, Carry Water: A Guide to Finding Spiritual Fulfillment in Everyday Life. I read this book in 1984 just three years before Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway was published. Even though I had been on the spiritual path for a number of years, reading this book made me feel like a kid in a candy shop. All the 'tastes' the interesting format offers are so delicious...the stories, the quotes, the evocative photographs of times gone by, and the contributions from the greatest minds from ancient times to 1984 when the book was published

Chop Wood, Carry Water was written by Rick Fields, with Peggy Tayler, Rex Weyler and Rick Ingrasci, all of whom were editors of New Age Journal at the time the book was written. The title comes from a poem written more than a thousand years ago by a Chinese Zen master which reads:

Magical power,
Marvelous action!
Chopping wood,
Carrying water...

As the authors say, 'The message is just as true today as it was then: we can find the profoundest heights and depths of the spiritual life in our everyday life.' And they show us how.

The sources they draw upon are wonderfully vast and varied. They include the accumulated wisdom of great spiritual teachers including Christ, the Buddha, Lao Tse, Confucius plus more contemporary teachers such as scientists, scholars, rabbis, psychologists, artists, athletes, business people, and poets. And you get a taste of all of the above...and more!

The authors have managed to introduce all this wisdom of the spirit into the events of modern living as it applies to intimate relationships, sex, family, work, money, play, health, technology, social action, the earth…and more. Their desire was to show us the way to find spiritual fulfillment in it all.

Some books never grow old and Chop Wood, Carry Water is certainly one of them. Enjoy!
