Excerpt

My son, Gerry, gave me the title for this book and I loved it the minute I heard it. It makes me laugh, as it does most people who hear it...which is a very good thing. It also expresses in a nutshell the frustration that all parents, even those who adore parenting, feel during those very difficult times which are an inevitable part of the raising of children.

Understand that I'm Okay...You're a Brat is not an anti-child book; rather, it focuses on seldom talked about aspects of parenthood. For much too long a time, the rewards of parenthood have been hugely magnified while the woes have been surrounded by what has been described by a number of people as a conspiracy of silence. For many reasons which will become evident as you read through this book, I felt it was important to expose this harmful conspiracy and let the truth be known.

I'm Okay...You're a Brat is an irreverent, humorous, and poignant look at closely held secrets that many parents hold deeply within their hearts. On these pages you will learn the de-glorified truth about many of the realities of raising children. It is written with a great deal of compassion for the feelings of parents; too many books dwell only on the feelings of the child. My goal was to heal the pain, the guilt, the frustration, the anguish, the confusion, the anger, and the worry too many parents feel as a result of all the myths and half-truths they have been fed by our society. My hope is that in the midst of the humor and honesty, parents and would-be parents will find a wonderful sense of comfort, understanding, wisdom, satisfaction, and lightness that has eluded them before.

I'm Okay...You're a Brat is written for a very broad audience of both men and women:

  • parents of all ages who experience great guilt and confusion relative to the job they did or are doing in the raising of their children;

  • would-be-parents who need to see all sides of the big picture before they decide to take the big step;

  • those who want to remain child-free and need to know that this can be a very healthy and sound choice, contrary to what society has told them;

  • those who can't have children and need to know that their happiness and fulfillment does not depend on their becoming parents.
  • There are too few books about parenthood written with the honesty you will find within these pages. Most of you will thank me profusely for questioning long-held ideologies that have kept parents imprisoned in a web of guilt. Others will criticize me for going against the grain of their beliefs. But I'm willing to take that chance. In fact, controversy is a good thing. For when diverse feelings are exposed and understood, and when the illusions are smashed, we have ALL been set free.
